Memoriam Primi

Childhood is the foundation for one’s future. Joy, conflict, trauma – all of these things lead to the person we each become. Or do they? On this week’s episode, our story leads us into an ongoing debate: nature vs. nurture. Where do YOU believe your personality stems from?

Welcome to Smirk. A podcast that covers society and culture through a storytelling lens. Part creative writing, part discussion, and always interesting. Each week our hosts brings a story to the show, a story they wrote themselves, which is immediately followed by discussion on the author’s moral or theme.

These stories can cover any topic the host wants to discuss, it can be lighthearted or more serious. No one but the author knows if these tales are truth or fiction, and part of the fun is guessing while you’re listening before the reality is made clear.

We want to hear from you! If you want to share YOUR story, join the conversation by writing in to mystory@smirkpodcast.com, and include your moral, or you can let us guess at it. This is the podcast that looks at truth, fiction, and reality. With a Smirk.

Don’t forget to subscribe to Smirk and share the show with your friends!

Memoriam Primi

I see them, faintly.

Arguing, shouting. It’s loud, but I try to ignore it.

This is established. Par for the course, as they say. I can’t make out what they’re yelling about, but I imagine it’s some stupid nonsense.

Always was, from my recollection.

I sat on the ground in the basement, trying to ignore the noisy chaos. I play with my toy cars. The dump truck is carrying the fleet of muscle cars and sports cars; the good stuff. Y’know, as dump trucks do.

It backs up, unloading the cars onto the concrete floor. It’s racing time. But first the truck needs to get out of here, its purpose fulfilled.

Time for these cars to move! It’s a fun time, I bet the red convertible wins again.

Race postponed, unfortunately.

The screaming intensifies from down the room. They’re loud, distracting the audience from the street race about to begin on the basement floor.

Gently, I push the unneeded dump truck towards to arguing figures. The truck needs to get out of here, and maybe it can make them stop yelling. I hope it will. I hope anything will.

To my surprise, the truck isn’t much of a distraction to them. It doesn’t make them stop. It gets kicked back in my direction, hitting the wall behind me and breaking apart. I’ve lost my vehicle transport.

I’m yelled at for interrupting. Guess that’s my fault. I sure hope the race is a good one today.
